The price of a printer is only the start: what you pay over the years is the ink or toner. Choose by how much you print.
Three kinds of printer
- Cartridge inkjet: cheapest to buy, most expensive per page. Right if you print a few pages a month.
- EcoTank / ink tank: costs more to buy, but you fill it from bottles that print thousands of pages. The cheapest way to print in colour at home.
- Laser: fast, the toner doesn't dry out, and the cost per page is low. Best for documents and offices.
Which one for you?
- A few pages a month, sometimes a photo: a cartridge inkjet is fine.
- Families and students who print every week, in colour: an EcoTank printer.
- Mostly black-and-white documents: a mono laser printer, with duplex to print on both sides.
- An office: a laser multifunction (print, scan, copy) on the network or Wi-Fi.
Tips that save money
- Inkjets that sit unused can dry out; print a page every week or two, or choose laser.
- Compatible toners cost less than originals for many laser printers.
- Print in draft or black-and-white for notes.
Does an EcoTank printer pay for itself?
If you print often, yes: the bottles that come with it print many pages, and refills cost far less than cartridges for the same pages.
